Mining and metals conglomerate Vedanta Group is exploring a major investment of ₹70,000 to ₹80,000 crore in West Bengal to set up power generation facilities and an aluminium smelter.
The announcement follows a strategic meeting between Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Under the proposed plan, power production will be established contingent on detailed feasibility studies, resource availability, and local infrastructure support.
Paschim Bardhaman district has emerged as a primary candidate location, where Vedanta already holds existing land assets. However, the group is keeping options open for alternative sites across the state based on land suitability and operational needs. The planned smelter is expected to draw raw alumina transported from Vedanta’s ongoing operations in Odisha.
If realized, the massive capital outlay will unlock substantial opportunities in EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contracts, industrial infrastructure, logistics networks, and regional employment. Final parameters and timelines will be determined after complete technical feasibility reviews and further government discussions.
